Overview
#

The Yorkshire Terrier β€” “Yorkie” β€” is proof that size has nothing to do with attitude. At under 7 pounds, these tiny dogs carry themselves with the confidence of a lion. They were originally ratters in English textile mills, and that scrappy, fearless heritage still defines the breed.

Yorkies are ideal for apartment dwellers who want a portable companion with minimal shedding. But don’t mistake small for low-maintenance: their coat requires serious care, and their housebreaking can test the patience of even experienced owners.

History & Origin
#

Developed in Yorkshire, England during the Industrial Revolution, Yorkies were bred by Scottish weavers who brought small terriers south for ratting in textile mills. Crosses between the now-extinct Clydesdale Terrier, Paisley Terrier, and possibly the Skye Terrier produced the Yorkie. The breed was originally larger (12–14 lbs) before being bred down to today’s toy size.

Appearance & Size
#

Yorkies are compact, well-proportioned toy dogs with a distinctive long, silky coat that parts down the back. The traditional show coat reaches the floor; most pet Yorkies are kept in a short “puppy cut.”

The coat is more like human hair than dog fur β€” continuously growing, minimal shedding, and suitable for many allergy sufferers. Blue and tan is the classic color, but puppies are born black and tan, developing their blue as they mature.

Temperament & Personality
#

Yorkies embody the terrier spirit in a tiny package. Key traits:

  • Confident and brave β€” they’ll challenge dogs ten times their size
  • Velcro companions β€” Yorkies want to be with their person constantly
  • Alert and vocal β€” they notice everything and comment on all of it
  • Clever and stubborn β€” they learn fast but obey selectively

Housebreaking
#

Yorkies are notoriously difficult to housebreak. Their tiny bladders need frequent trips outside, and they’re reluctant to go out in rain or cold. Many owners use indoor potty pads as a backup. Expect 6–12 months of consistent effort.

Health & Lifespan
#

Yorkies live 11–15 years.

Condition Notes
Patellar Luxation Common in toy breeds
Tracheal Collapse Use harness, never collar
Dental Disease Small mouths crowd teeth; daily brushing
Liver Shunt Serious; requires surgery
Hypoglycemia Risk in tiny puppies

Care & Maintenance
#

Exercise: 20–30 minutes daily. Short walks plus indoor play suffice.

Grooming: Daily brushing for long coats; every 2–3 days for puppy cuts. Professional grooming every 4–6 weeks. Dental care is critical.

Training
#

Yorkies are intelligent terriers β€” they learn commands easily but obey when they feel like it. Short, positive sessions with treats work best. Socialization prevents them from becoming yappy and fearful.

Frequently Asked Questions
#

How much does a Yorkie cost? $1,200–$3,000. Teacup Yorkies (bred dangerously small) should be avoided.

Are Yorkies good with cats? Often yes β€” their ratting instinct may trigger with small rodents, but cats are usually fine.
